When we met Mr Lim, he was at home, suffering from the effects of a mild stroke. A soft-spoken man in his 70s, he often spoke with quiet pride about his eldest grandson — the first in the next generation to complete his studies — and his wish to attend the upcoming polytechnic graduation ceremony in person.

It was more than a family celebration; it was a promise he had made to himself — “I’ll be there when he graduates.”
